the American Revolution texts, at the time of this being written about one third of the colonists supported the revolution, about one third supported Great Britain's ruling, and about a third were neutral. This means that Paine was presented with the task of persuading about two-thirds of the colonial population to stand behind the revolution. Throughout his work, Paine uses emotion and experience to persuade his audience. He uses a patriotic tone to show his utter support for this movement. He also even acknowledges his counterarguments and dismisses him. There is a part in Common Sense where his does this that I believe is noteworthy: "I have heard it asserted by some that as America has flourished under her former connection with Great Britain, the same connection is necessary toward her future happiness, and will always have that same effect. He is talking about how if America weren't tied to Great Britain, they would have a lot more countries to trade with, and that these countries would certainly be open to it if it weren't for Great Britain. He wrote, "whenever a war breaks out between England and any foreign power, the trade of America goes to ruin, because of her connection with Britain."
