There are 59 million cats and 52.9 million dogs, yet dogs are found in 4.2 million more American households than their feline counterparts, according to a recent report prepared by the American Veterinary Medical Association. However, this great disparity between dogs and cats should not seem alarming considering the fact that dogs have been around for centuries as the human's steadfast animal companion. Since the earliest agrarian societies, to the modern post-industrial societies of today, dogs have been an intregal part of how humans have functioned. Unlike cats, dogs have sense of usefulness and belonging that appeals to a larger segment of the American population.

animals and need attention like humans. Dogs are highly devoted and appreciative animals and display their love every chance they get. A prime example is the over aggressive wagging tail, running in circles, hanging out the tongue, and standing on their back legs greet, when a owner walks in the front door. As in humans, dogs come in all shapes, and sizes, therefore it is easier to satisfy a wider variety of owners.
One of the many common appeals of dogs to humans is their unique looks and abilities. Different breed of dogs can be as large as the Great Dane or as small as the Terrier, and each size range is suitable for all sorts of different owners. Some dogs are bred to be highly protective, like a Doberman Pincher and some are breed to herd sheep, but what separates the dog from any other pet is their ability to be trained. Regardless, they will not answer and for this reason, cats can not be trained to the extent a dog can. No breed of cat will even think about getting in front of a movie camera and purr on cue or be able to play a simple game of fetch with a ball. Instead of living an active life like a dog, cats would rather sleep twenty hours out of the day and therefore turns away many potential owners.
