The artistic community in Anais Nin's professional life and the mathematical community in John Nash's professional life are similar in that they are both very exclusive. They are also markedly different in the type of achievements that might be considered successful yet, both Nin and Nash are asked to prove their own value based on success. In the case of Nin she distances herself from her husband, who is only an outside member of the elitist artistic group as more of a patron rather than a full-fledged member of the social circle. She must distance herself from not only her husband and her position as a woman but her relatively economically protected life by living the life of the starving artist.
