Compare and Contrast Plath's "mirror" and Li Ho's "A Beautiful Girl Combs Her Hair"

Comparing and contrasting Sylvia Plath's "mirror" and Li Ho's "A Beautiful Girl Combs Her Hair"

Although stylistically different, Ho and Plath have crafted two poems that speak about a woman's age and the "reflection" of their lives.
One of the most interesting differences about these poems stems from the authors themselves. One a Chinese man of royal lineage and the other a modern day Caucasian woman known for her book The Bell Jar, both writing about perfection, age and women.
The poems both contain no direct dialogue but can be described as dramatic poems based on the content. It is as if the poet is speaking directly to his/her audience.

Plath's poem belies getting old in contrast to Ho's display of youth. Consider the line, "In me she has drowned a young girl....". Plath is obviously referring to the death of youth. Age has taken away this woman's beauty and replaced it with the look of age. In Ho's work, "spring wind makes me restless...." hints at the newness of spring and "eighteen and her hair so thick" identifies the age of youth.
Plath uses illusion and imagery when she states, "Now I am a lake. A woman bends over me. This creates the illusion of a mirror reflection. The woman sees her own reflection and realizes who she has become. The lake brings back the reality of her life now. She is the old woman that she sees reflected in the mirror.
Ho's writing has an erratic quality but he too uses imagery to refine his characterizations. "In a cloud patterned skirt, she walks with even steps" depicts the ...
