Compare And Contrast The War Poems By Jessie Pope And Rupert Brooke To Those Of Wilfred Owen

amongst the British during war- time and in my opinion, her recruiting poem; “Who’s for the Game” is irresponsible. It gives young men, and their families who would want to persuade the men to join the army, a completely false image of war. However, it is an army recruitment poem, and for the reason it was written, I believe it is a very powerful and manipulative piece of propaganda . This is down to the way the poem is seemingly directed at YOU, no matter who is reading it. It makes you feel that if you do not join the army, you will be missing out on an amazing event:
“Who’ll give his country a hand?
[rather] Than lie low and be out of the fun”
You feel that you would be doing your duty to King and Country by joining the army and be a traitor if you did not:

“Your country is up to her neck in a fight
And she’s looking and calling for You”

to the nation. It has relieved people from a world which has “grown old and cold and weary”. It has “wakened [them] from sleeping” and turned them to “swimmers into cleanness leaping”. Brooke puts the importance of war into perspective with this poem. The new recruits will put the cowardly “Half- men” they leave behind, to shame:

“Leave the sick hearts that honour could not move
And half-men and their dirty songs and dreary”

Brooke gets rid of any worries about leaving behind wives and family by comparing the importance and splendour of war to the “little emptiness of love”. He ends with the notion that dying for their country is better than the men carrying on living their normal ...
