Comparing Employees In America And Their Kenyan Counterparts



My working experiences in Kenya and the U.S.A taught me how the different working conditions in these countries exposed employees to certain advantages and disadvantages.
I completed my high school studies in October 1998, and almost immediately joined my father as an apprentice in our family business: a muffler factory. I worked there for almost one year before coming to the U.S. for further studies. My brother in law runs a printing business here, and I help him out from time to time. I realized that in most ways, the working system in this country is much better than that back home, but it also has its disadvantages.

bribing government officials. In Kenya, however, it is the exact opposite. For example, the fitting technicians at our muffler factory hardly ever wear any protective clothing, even when welding metal using highly flammable gases. Despite being aware of the risks, they consider it to be 'unmanly' to wear any safety equipment. Their thinking is not much different from other employees all over the country. As a result, many accidents are caused by lack of appropriate safety measures. Sanitation facilities are in a deplorable state in most workplaces, as government officials rarely come by to check on these facilities. When they do come by, however, a small bribe from the employer ensures that the matter is not pursued any further, and things go on as usual.
Employees hold a position of respect in America. Their employers regard them as an asset to their company, and every effort is made to keep employees happy in any workplace. Economic prosperity has enabled American workers ...
