In Favor of Corot

Jean Baptiste Camille Corot and Berthe Marie Paul Morisot are both familiar names to the art-seeking public. These days, perhaps Morisot is the more familiar; for the past thirty years or so, women artists have gotten a lot of press, although, when one is speaking of 19th Century artists, perhaps it is American-in-Paris Mary Cassatt who has gained the most press.
Press and gender of the painter are not, however, good enough justifications for purchasing one painting or another. Budget may have an effect. one's self to enjoy might only take into consideration subject matter, painting techniques, what the painting represents both literally and figuratively to the buyer.
Buying a painting for a public collection must take all those things into account also, save one. Whether it appeals to the curator on a personal level or not is irrelevant. By its nature, paintings that appeal to one person will leave 99 others cold.
So, how to decide? What will be the tie-breaker between these paintings of Corot and Morisot.
Possibly the tie can be broken by technique. Corot's technique is more studied, more dependent on the time-honored painterly habit of blending brushstrokes and applying texture in a subtle and understated way.
Morisot uses the brush in a more modern way, using strokes that not only don't blend into each other, but often overlap in a very visible manner. She lays on more clearly defined strokes of broader color than does Corot.

Nor has he painted the sentimental view of peasants that were the only fit subjects of non-noble paintings until Corot's day. ...
