Ares was the God of War born in Thrace. He is also the son of Zeus and Hera, both of whom, detested him. Zues once told him, “To me you are most hateful of all gods who hold Olympos.” (Iliad, book 5, lines 841-895) Ares was also thought to be murderous, bloodstained, and the incarnate curse of mortals and also very strangely, a coward who will scream with pain and run away when wounded. Zues and Metis and the goddesses of wisdom and war. Athena used her wisdom to invent the yoke and the bridle, the sailing ship, and the flute and the pot, rake, plow, and the trumpet. She also invented numbers for man to use. Unlike Ares, Athena took no pleasure from war, preffering instead to take peacefull actions to settle matters of conflict. Athena showed mercy, and if ever it came to her to cast a deciding vote in a criminal trial, she usually chose to liberate the accused. Athena is said to be born twice; once from her mother Metis, after Zues swallowed her to prevent another child from being born; and another time from Zues’ head after he was said to have his head split open by Hephaestus to relieve the most painful headache that has ever been endured. Out of Zues’ skull Athena is said to have sprang out alredy in a full set of armor. Atena is a virgin goddess who was modest but also generous in punishment.
