The arrival of the computer age has been slowly inching into the healthcare systems to allow the nurses to spend less time writing out the charts and spend more time treating the patients. As many healthcare systems have budgeted millions of dollars to streamline this new technology, they have found that another budget of millions needed to train the employees and physicians to be familiar with the software. Two such pieces of technology is the Electronic Patient (or health) record (EHR) and the Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE).

applications can also be utilized for patient billing, supplies, and many other attributes that the healthcare system wishes to use with the software. The programs allow a more accurate description of type of treatment/orders without the guess work of the nurse to figure out what the doctor wrote or vice versa. The software also adjusts and checks the drug compatibility. This technology has taken a giant step in a reduction in medication errors, from a deciphering the doctors handwritten notes. The nurse is also at the bedside more while charting and gets to see the patient more instead of sitting behind a desk handwriting their care plans which increases the patient safety, care, and satisfaction.
