"Invisible Man" which was written at a time when the segregation of the African Americans was common in a society where the whites considered themselves superior. Ellison emphasizes the individual and his need to create an identity for himself that is real. Though freed from slavery the African Americans segregation in all walks of life had caused them to live on the fringes of society. They were free, and yet they could not assimilate in the mainstream America. This situation caused Ellison to create his protagonist who was the 'Invisible Man' alive, yet unacknowledged by the world. The need to assume a responsibility of their-selves became a priority. The African Americans had become the 'outsiders' in America and they were looking for a way in which, they would be accorded their rights as humans. (Chametzky, 1996) As the opening lines of the story state,
"I am an invisible man...I am a man of substance, of flesh and bone, fiber and liquids - and I might even be said to possess ...
