Conformity

There are seven different factors which affect conformity. These are cultural factors, historical, individual, gender, group size, unanimity and type of task. Cultural factors are ones that change depending on the part of the world you are from. Historical are those which change depending on when in time the studies took place. Gender is factors differ between men and women. Group size is how large a group needs to be to affect conformity. Unanimity is how much people will conform to retain unanimity. And type of task is how much people will conform depending on the type of task they are performing. I will be looking at three of these in detail and evaluating them.

taken place, Asch found that 75% of subjects conformed at least once. However this test was recreated by Perrin and Spencer in 1980 and they found that only one subject conformed out of 396 trials. Many other studies have been done to recreate Asch’s experiment and no one has ever found such high levels of conformity as he did. There are many reasons as to why Asch found such high levels of conformity, the first being the state of America when this study was done. America had only recently come out of World War Two and conformity was rife due to the state of the Americans whose memories were still fresh from that time. Keith E Rice criticised Asch’s study stating that at the time of the experiment ‘during the 1950’s conformity was higher and doing your own thing was less socially acceptable.
