The aim of this report is to outline some of the controversies surrounding herbal medicine and St Johns Wort, in order to gain a greater understanding of the role of research and regulation in complementary therapy.

2.0 Herbal remedies and St Johns Wort

Herbal remedies and complementary medicine are increasingly popular with something “natural” being preferred to synthetic drugs. People believe herbal remedies to be harmless. While herbal remedies do have a value medicinally, there is a lack of knowledge to their effects, standardisation of content and active ingredient. Also labels were not easily interpreted by professional pharmacists, who found the labels vague. Consumers may not be taking the right dosage, or the most active species of the plant. The time of harvesting can also affect the efficacy.

There are warnings are in the media about herbal remedies such as found in the Daily Telegraph (Smith 2010) that St Johns Wort can reduce the effect of drugs such as those used to treat heart rhythm and blood .

Another controversy identified in a book by Newall ,Anderson and Phillipson,(1996,p.251) is that” St johns wort is stated to be contraindicated in depression although no rational is given for this statement which appears to contradict the anti depressant actions documented for St Johns Wort.”
