World War 1 was a very significant event that occurred from 1914-1918 in the European History. The countries involved in World War 1 were: Serbia, Austria-Hungary, Germany, Russia, Belgium, France, Italy, and Great Britain. Whilst all the �Great Powers� were involved in World War 1 and contributed to the cause of the outbreak, they were not the overall cause for World War 1. Naval expansion was extremely competitive, particularly between Germany and Great Britain. In 1906, British launched the Dreadnought, a navy that was two and half times as large as the second-largest navy, invented by Admiral Sir John Fisher. As British increased the output of battleships, Germany consequently stepped up their naval production. From 1913 to 1914, Germany increased her standing forces by 170,000 men. France lengthened her period of military service from two to three years. Russia lengthened her term of service from three to three and half years. By 1914 Germany had the greatest increase in military build up. In this time period, Great Britain and Germany both greatly increased their navies and vied for the world�s largest and powerful navies.
