Braille Abacus by Fleur Schell


Fleur Schell's "Braille Abacus" art installation is made out of 12 white porcelain bottles slip-casted from a two-piece mould and hanging on a weathered Jarrah frame and metal polls. There are 11 white porcelain bottles (6 on top, 5 on bottom) and one dirty glass bottle on the bottom. Each bottle conveys a sentence in Braille by the use of raised dots fused into the bottle's sides. Fleur uses the artistic elements and principles of texture, shape, space, colour, repetition and pattern.

singular class bottle in the bottom left corner. This bottle also contrasts due to its square shape, which stands out in comparison to the rounded shape of the white bottles. The repetition of the bottles and the braille markings also creates pattern and an irregular rhythm to the composition. This rhythm, although irregular, creates perceived movement which draws the viewers' attention from left to right down both rows of the composition.

Fleur say herself that "The narrative explains the final resting place of all of the original disregarded glass bottles that these porcelain bottles were cast from." The artwork does not fit into a specific genre as Fleur mixes a load of different genres from surrealism, post-modern, Dada (found objects) and ready-mades.

Fleur has used different types of skills from woodwork in making the Jarrah frame to 2-piece mould slip casting and writing in braille on the fired bottles. As stated on Fleur's website "Fleur Schell is an international ...
