Cuba was a popular attraction for Americans about forty years ago. Under the restrictions imposed by the American economic embargo Cuba became off limits to Americans. Cuba is the largest of the Caribbean islands located 145km south of the United States across the Florida straits. The island is about 750 miles long with an average width of 60 miles and maximum width of 125 miles. Havana is the capital of Cuba and the nations leading seaport. Spanish conquistadors founded the city during the 16th century. The Americans who are permitted to visit Cuba are the ones visiting close family once a year for humanitarian reasons. visit place like Varadero, Cuba's premier tourist beach area. Like the other Caribbean islands Cuba as beautiful beaches that attract people who "worship" the sun. Many Americans also may be found at the legendary Tropicana outdoor nightclub where chorus girls dance to Cuban rhythms. Curiosity is another reason people visit, they want to actually see what Cuba is really like. Some Americans who are traveling to Cuba for the first time are very surprised by the friendliness of the native people. Today there are two Havanas old Havana and new Havana. In old Havana the unpainted crumbling colonial architecture remains to be beautiful. The famous Capitolio building was inspired by the capital building in Washington. It is now the home of the academy of sciences. Hotel Inglatera also very famous was built in the 1860's and is still considered one of the best.
