The Cuban Missile Crisis

The specter of nuclear warfare during the 1960’s cast a gloomy shadow over the United States and the rest of the Western world. No event had more significance during this conflict than the Cuban Missile Crisis. The Cuban Missile Crisis almost brought another World War to America and a nuclear war between the United States and the U.S.S.R. Never before or since had America been so close to nuclear destruction The stage was set for one of the most important and potentally catastrophic moments in 21st century global conflict.

The crisis formally started on October 15th, 1962. On a routine flyover, a United States U2 spy-plane spotted what appeared to be missile silo and loading dock on Cuban soil. Further reconnaissance pictures revealed ss-4 nuclear missiles being readied for a potential attack on the United States

- Kennedy is informed of the situation
- Creates a special cabinet of 12 people called EX-COMM to advise him on the situation

Kennedy knew that he had to respond immediately for the sake of national security.
