The Lord of the Flies

William Golding's Lord of the Flies is a novel of tremendous human interest, exploring as it does the darker side of human nature. Indeed, "it explores some of the most intense urges and emotions in our repertoire: the desire for power, the fear of the unknown, fear of other people, anger, and jealousy." (Johnson & Olsen, p. 2) Interestingly, the work is of great political and social interest as well because it highlights the fact that the potential to unleash the darker side of human nature is greatest in the absence of a democratic form of government.

(Golding, p. 22) The inference that can be drawn from Ralph's election is that his rise to power was more on account of irrational reasons rather than any known or professed ability to protect and nurture the fledgling society. Indeed, history stands witness to many an autocratic leader mesmerizing their public similarly. The second mistake that Golding's boys, perhaps unknowingly make, is to establish a social order that relies on the ability of a single leader.

These initial mistakes are made apparent as the story unfolds and it is obvious that Ralph fails to live up to the responsibility entrusted to him, ultimately leading to his loss of power to Jack.
