Deadly Unna Essay

Deadly Unna is a novel written by Phillip Gweynne, writing about Blacky’s life, a 14 years old boy living in a fishing town. The story is based on football game but actually talking more about racism, gender and morals, as well as human behaviors and relationships. It’s a really true book that many stereotypes and characters are presented, it shows lots of human nature which really help us to learn about racism and gender issues. Australian rule is a similar film based on the novel directed by Paul Goldman. Blacky lives in the port, most of the people in the port are non-indigenous, including Blacky. As he narrates the whole story, he is special compare to other kids. As he said“all the kids in town, like Dazza and Pickles, hate school. Useless. Don’t learn anything. Can’t wait to leave. Not me. I like school. Some of the stuff is really useful.” It leaves us a good impression of him that he is a good boy, unlike others. On the other hand, he is also a unconfident guy. He is labeled as a ‘gutless wonder’ by his dad, which makes his self esteem even lower. Everyone is terrified of the term. Blacky has talked about the issue in the story. “Once you’ve been labeled a gutless wonder, then that’s it, the label sticks. Like it’s been superglued to your forehead.
