DuBois and Washington's philosophy's differed in many ways. Washington felt that Negroes must learn to do useful and practical things. While DuBois believed in higher education of a "Talented Tenth" who through their knowledge of modern culture could guide the American Negro into a higher civilization.
W.E.B. DuBois was the most influential critic of Booker T. Washington's policy of racial accommodation and gradualism. He showed a genuine concern for the development of his race and a determination to expedite freedom for his people from discrimination.
