Karl Marx and Alexis de Tocqueville both lived in the time of the French Revolution. Yet they had drastically different views regarding their thoughts about the revolution, where society was headed, and whether or not certain aspects of the revolution were indeed good or bad for the people.
Marx believed that it was the class struggles between the bourgeoisie and the proletariats that were the cause of this revolution. He felt that whenever there was an obvious distinction between so-called “have” and “have-nots”, there would be unrest amongst the have-nots as they struggled for more power and control of their surroundings. The proletariats had to come together and be united about their ideas and strategies. They had to let go of their past resentments and forge ahead against their future problems – “in order to arrive at it’s content, the revolution of the nineteenth century must let the dead bury their dead” (Marx, 597). Otherwise, they would just get into the reoccurring pattern of having to start up where they left off, after ever small step forward. “Proletarian revolutions…criticize themselves constantly, interrupt themselves continually in their own course…deride with unmerciful thoroughness the inadequacies, weaknesses and paltriness of their first attempts…” (Marx, 597).
