However, the motion of the Discobolus has clearly been restricted to one plane which means that only two distinct views are possible. This figure, represented at the point between the backward swing of the discus and the forward thrust of the arm, becomes by means of certain formal devices an expression of concentrated force. The composition is in terms of two intersecting arcs, creating the impression of a tightly-stretched bow one moment before the string is released. Also, this statue seems to burst with the tension of the athlete's actions. This great figure, at least stylistically, resembles other pieces from the same period, such as the Charioteer from the Sanctuary of Apollo in Delphi and certain figures from the pediments of the Temple of Zeus at Olympia.
