While there are always consequences to lying, people often find that the repercussions to telling the truth are greater.

In his book, Mere Christianity, C.S. Lewis proposes an idea he has about Moral Law. He explains how humans often have to decipher which conflicting value or impulse is more appropriate to a certain purpose, and that “every [impulse] is right at one time and wrong at another” (Lewis). Lying is not always a good impulse, but at times people view it as necessary if telling the truth does a lot more damage. They lie all in an effort to protect their relationships.
