The USSR (Union of Soviet Republics) officially dissolved on Christmas Day 1991, leaving fifteen republics of the Soviet Union as independent states. The dissolution of the Soviet Union officially ended the Cold War and marked the collapse of a Superpower.
On March 11, 1985, within a few hours after the death of Konstantin Chernenko, Mikhail Gorbachev was elected General Secretary of the Soviet Union by the Politburo. Gorbachev main goal as General Secretary was to revive the Soviet Union's economy, in which was stationary at the time. On December 26, 1986 citizens of Latvia showed the first public display of displeasure with the Soviet Union. 300 working-class Latvian youths gathered in Riga's Cathedral Square and marched down Lenin Avenue toward the Freedom Monument shouting, "Soviet Russia out! Free Latvia!" Security forces confronted the marchers, and several police vehicles were overturned. Also in December of 1986 there were riots in Kazakhstan. The riots were due to the fact that Gorbachev's dismissal of The First Secretary of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan, Dinmukhamed Konayev , whom was an ethnic Kazakh. He was replaced with Gennady Koblin, who was an outsider from Russian SFSR. The protest lasted for three days and included up to 40,000 protestors, over 5,000 arrested.
