Dissent In Colonial America and America's History

Colonial America was created essentially by groups of individuals seeking freedom from the oppressive British government. Many brave and independent thinking individuals helped carve an American Spirit from the moment they stepped foot on New England's soil.
Seventeenth-century English Calvinists wanted to purify the church and were known as Puritans. James I and Charles I believed that their authority should include the right to enforce religious conformity, including persecution of the Puritans, who were challenging many of the church's major precepts. This struggle led to the Puritans deciding to move to America.

was founded by refugees from Massachusetts, who were seeking religious and political freedom. The population of Rhode Island was significant in establishing independence from Great Britain. With the influence of Roger Williams, a Separatist, Rhode Island colonists were one of the first colonies to practice religious freedom and individualism. Another dissenter who proved to be a challenge to Massachusetts Bay orthodoxy was Anne Hutchinson. She was a follower of John Cotton, who "stressed the covenant of grace, of God's free gift of salvation to unworthy, helpless human beings" (36). Her beliefs were threatening to the Puritans, as they threatened religious orthodoxy and well as gender roles.
Pennsylvania was known for its Quakers. William Penn promised religious freedom, land, and an established representative assembly (47). As a result, Welsh, Irish, Dutch, and German people seeking religious freedom found their way to Pennsylvania in a seemingly short amount of time. ...
