Dont Blame the Eater

In "Don't Blame the Eater," David Zinczenko maintains that fast food restaurants are guilty of perpetuating the obesity epidemic in modern society. First he argues that there is an abundance of fast food restaurants in North America, especially in comparison to healthier alternatives. Furthermore, Zinczenko maintains that the calorie information is unclear and often inaccurate, which causes misleading perceptions about fast food being a healthy choice. Also, he argues that the problem of obesity is a social concern rather than an individual matter, and so he states that it should be addressed publically rather than being dealt with on an individual basis.

he uses statistics in order to show how obesity is a consequence of diabetes by examining the medical results of being overweight. He explains the growing cost of diabetes and obesity, mentioning that health care costs have increased from $2.6 billion in health care costs in 1969 to $100 billion today. These statistics help Zinczenko argue that obesity is a social problem rather than an individual problem, since everyone bears the financial burden of obesity. Also, hyperbole was used to show how fast food restaurants give inaccurate calorie information. For example, when discussing the nutritional value of a salad, Zinczenko states "[a] dd a serving of the 280 calorie dressing...and you're suddenly up around 1,040 calories" (Zinczenko 197). In this statement, Zinczenko uses hyperbole to demonstrate the extreme difference between the apparent and actual calorie information, thus arguing that consumers have no means of controlling their caloric intake.
