The purpose of this paper is to introduce, discuss, and analyze a chapter in the book "A Dying Colonialism" by Frantz Fanon. Specifically, it will discuss in relation to U.S. claims to "bring" democracy to Iraq, what is the central lesson of Fanon's essay on the French attempt to "unveil" the Algerian woman?
The central lesson in Fanon's essay is quite equivalent to what is happening in Iraq today, for the United States is in fact forcing their own form of government and belief systems on a Muslim country that has a far different outlook on life. this statement is extremely relevant to the struggle in Iraq today, as our own hopes and aggressiveness also increase with every step the Iraqis take toward democracy and freedom. These are not unhealthy standards; yet, one must wonder what the Iraqis would choose if left to their own devices, rather than with the pressure the U.S. has exerted in the choice of democracy. Since it is their country, now that they are free of the shadow of Saddam Hussein, they should be able to choose their own path, rather than have their path chosen for them, just as Hussein did all those years.
Ultimately, Fanon's lesson is a lesson in world politics. No matter how good the intentions are of the aggressor, they come with their own ideas and opinions into a country that has its own identity and culture.
