and viewpoints were reflected in the French Revolution. The leader of the Haitian revolution was heavily influenced by Enlightenment ideas. Toussaint L'Ouverture was born a slave but he was allowed to learn to read and write. L’Ouverture admired the writings of French Enlightenment philosophers, particularly those who spoke of equality and individual rights such as Rousseau. In America, the influence the Enlightenment had on the Revolution is seen clearly in its constitution. The constitution borrows ideas that emerged from the minds of philosophers of the Enlightenment. John Locke’s ideas on securing life, liberty, and property, Rousseau’s idea of a “general will”, and Montesquieu’s ideas on separation of powers and checks and balances were both a part of the constitution and major influences on the minds of Americans.
