There may be many different reasons why the outcome of the story “Eveline” by James Joyce turned out the way it did but a few reasons are more convincing than others are. Eveline has a chance to do what most people can only dream of and that’s leaving with her boyfriend Frank so that she could start her life over. As you read the story you get the sense that anyone who lives such a miserable life would be mentally retarded not to leave everything behind. A promise is supposed to be something that is sacred. It’s something that is not ever to broken and this is what Eveline’s mother asked out of her. “ Strange that it should come that very night to remind her of the promise to her mother, her promise to keep the home together as long as she could” (6). This promise is not just an ordinary promise; it’s one that if it were broken would always be on the mind of Eveline. This promise is also very unfair to Eveline because she is contained to stay with a predictable disappointing lifestyle that she could definitely do without.
There are many factors why Eveline decides to stay. The question is which one has the most impact on her decision? Is it her fear that any environment could bring problems and she probably couldn’t handle ...
