Fallingwater, also known as the Kaufmann House, is located in Bear Run, Pennsylvania. This piece of work was built in the early-20th-century by Frank Lloyd Wright. This house was built between 1936 and 1939 on a waterfall.
Frank Lloyd Wright was from Wisconsin and then later in his life he moved to Chicago. There he became apart of a firm that was headed by a man named Louis Sullivan. Frank Wright wasn’t like most artists. He had a totally different view on art and how it should be done. His view was that in architecture things should be either “natural” or organic. in the summer for their workers to go to. But during the depression it was hard for the workers to afford to go to it, so the Kaufmann’s made it their own retreat. Then they eventually decided to build a new house.
The Kaufmann House was designed and built as get away in Bear Run, Pennsylvania. It was built for Edgar Kaufmann Sr., the head of the store that Frank Lloyd worked for. This piece of work defines Frank Lloyd’s approach to true-life architecture.
The Kaufmann House is located on a mountainside Frank Lloyd knew that the Kaufmann’s loved the waterfall that they saw everyday out their window, so he did something unique and built the house on top of the 30 foot waterfall. “Frank Lloyd Wright told them that he wanted them to live with the waterfalls, to make them part of their everyday life, and not just to look at them now and then.” (Fallingwater 10)
