In both Essays' "Underground Dads" by Wil Haygood and "Only Daughter" by Sandra Cisneros, Haygood and Cisneros talk about how growing up either without a dad or with one that doesn't support you can be hard. In the essay "Underground Dads", Haygood talks about being fatherless and how other people came into his life as a "Father Figure" for him as he grew up. In the essay "Only Daughter", Cisneros talks about growing up being the only daughter in the family and also that her dad paid more attention to her six brothers more then her.

the essay Haygood talks about three men that played a father role to him which are his mom's boyfriend Jerry, Jimmy his grandfather, and his uncles specifically Uncle Jerry.
