Fear in Jekyll and Hyde

It is quite surprising how much fear can take over a person. In the story Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson, fear is a thing that dominates everyone. At the time of the 1800’s, London itself was a fearful city. Mr. Utterson fears finding out who Mr. Hyde really is. Dr. Jekyll fears letting out his true self to the others. This book has an overall theme of fear.
The setting of this story takes place in the 1800’s and as many know, London at this time was a dark, mysterious city. some strange conflagration…” (62). The way the author describes the city in this story is dark and dirty. This sets a tone of mystery and fear. This fearful city helps the reader visualize what the characters are feeling.
Mr. Utterson takes upon the responsibility of cracking the case of who Mr. Hyde really is and what he’s up to. However, there is still a good amount of fear that he has inside of him. One night Utterson has a nightmare of, “…the great field of lamps of a nocturnal city; then of the figure of a man walking swiftly; then of a child running from the dorctor’s; and then these met, and that human Juggernaut trod the child down and passed on regardless of her screams… the figure in these two phases haunted the lawyer all night…” (48) Dreams have always been known to show any unconscious thoughts or wants that one has.
