Female genital mutilation is usually performed on young girls prior to puberty. It is practiced in more than twenty countries in Africa, in Oman, Southern Yemen, and the United Arab Emirates in the Middle East and in Indonesia and Malaysia in Asia. Statistics have shown that 90% or more of the women in Djibouti, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sierra Leone, Somalia and Sudan have been mutilated. There are over 30 million mutilated women currently living in Nigeria, and about 24 million in Ethiopia and Eritrea.
