Gillespie also treated Virgil differently in his profession when Virgil, being a homicide investigator, questioned he retorted, “If I want you to tell me anything I’ll ask you.” People like him did not want to show respect to people who they felt were lower class such as Virgil. During one of Pete’s discussions with Sam he said “oughta be white”, which signifies that they only respected Caucasian. It goes to show that even though Sam liked Virgil he still could not accept him as a equal because he was Black.
