In 1776 the Declaration of Independence was created by Thomas Jefferson and fellow founding fathers in hope of gaining independence from their mother country, Great Britain. the main guilt or "pity" white people would feel would be focused around the years of slavery the ancestors of African Americans suffered through, but Lucas tries to point out how many whites try to claim their innocence because they were not around back then and it wasn't their fault indirectly. However, the white man goes on to mention how black people of this day and age also weren't directly affected by the events that transpired earlier in American history, and thus being the reason why he doesn't feel "pity" for them.
