Gannett Company History

Gannett Company is today one of the largest newspaper groups in the
United States. Gannett now has facilities in 44 states, and the district
of Columbia, Guan, US virgin Island, Germany, Singapore and UK ( Hoover pg.
639 ). The newspaper company was founded by Frank Ernest Gannett, Who in
1906 began his interest in newspaper companies. Gannett was brought up
in New York. His father was a farmer who later owned several hotels.
Gannett First experience with newspaper was in collage were he worked on
the school news paper(Encyclopedia Britannica). After graduation college
he became the editor of Ithaca Journal in 1900. Gannett started his first

profitable to run(Encyclopidia Britinica). In 1912 Gannett purchased the
Ithaca Journal, this was a big foot in the door for Gannett he was now in
the division of upper New York. This was also the first paper that Gannett
worked for. In 1918 the now well developing company moved to Rochester,
another part of New York. After this move bought out his partners 1923 and
Formed the Gannett Company, Inc. ( Moody pg. 3326). Frank Gannett next
investment was in teletype letter. Teletype is a communication system
using teletype machines. The machine would send and receive signal by
means of two instruments resembling type writer.
In 1957 Mr. Frank Ernest Gannett died, his company had accumulated
30 newspaper at the time of hid death. Before he died Mr. Gannett
appointed Paul Miller as president and chief executive. Miller over saw
