Throughout history the gender roles for men and women have been clearly defined. Despite the extreme historical "standard", in today's society's gender roles are no longer black and white. Not only is gender determined in the womb so is gender role. Gender role is the expectation of being masculine or feminine.

An example of this would be if your mother is Queen you as a female would be destined to become a princess, and would one day marry a king and could not rule on her own, or if your father was a farmer you would one day also work on the farm and not work in the kitchen.
