Generation Of More Jobs By The Government

In his April 11, 2004 New York Times article, Louis Uchitelle argues that the private sector has not been generating enough jobs and that government needs to step in. The situation has steadily grown worse over the past several decades, namely since the years immediately following the Vietnam War. Uchitelle proposes that the government reexamine Roosevelt's New Deal policies that followed the Great Depression. Currently only liberal Democrats, who are in the minority, support such a view. The author mentions Senator Edward Kennedy as one of the main supporters of "another New Deal," coupled with a general increase in public spending.

The American public has become mistrusting of big government, and is therefore suspicious of federal employment programs and interventions. Moreover, in 1978, the Humphrey-Hawkins Act backfired. Therefore, most politicians do not want to embrace the views of congressmen like Senator Kennedy. In fact, only liberal members of the Democratic Party support the view that government should play a role in stimulating jobs. Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry holds a centrist, fiscally moderate view. Kerry does not believe that another New Deal is necessary, but rather hopes to continue to rely on the private sector to single-handedly generate full employment.
