Shortly after the death of a living organism its body begins to decompose. This means the body is broken down into simpler forms of matter. Once decomposition is complete the earth extracts the forms of matter that it uses as nutrients. One of the forms of matter that the earth does not use is carbon dioxide. The unused matter remains in the earth but is not used as nutrients. The matter will stay there until it is taken out by an outside force. Oil is actually the remnants of past living organisms that have decomposed and been extracted by the earth. When this is burned, carbon dioxide and methane are released into the air (Decomposition en.wikipedia.org).
