It is noteworthy to mention that in the very next line Merchant signs, � Pass the talking wire from where to who knows?� In my opinion, this is a fascinating line because Merchant does not only refers to the telegraph as the � Wire,� but she also to refers to the railroads that were responsible for connecting the telegraph lines. In brief, this line talks about two major factors that fueled the industrialization at the time. First, the railroad industry, which played a major role in transporting people, goods, and materials across the country. Second, major scientific inventions like the telegraph that revolutionized long-distance communication in America. Furthermore, Nathalie mentions � The land was free and the price was right.� The price women had to pay was to leave everything behind. Their homes, their families, their culture. However, the price was justified by the major opportunities offered in the West.
