Good Decisions and Right Actions

1. A good decision is based on that which is deemed as being truly honorable, and not based on personal financial gain but on wisdom and virtue (17-18).
Let's say a person is shopping in a marketplace. One of the stands is currently unmanned: the vendor must have stepped away for a few minutes. The shopper knows that he can easily get away with stealing something from the table of wares. No one would notice and he would not get caught. However, the shopper decides to wait for the vendor to return and actually buys something. This is a good decision, one that is truly honorable and not based on personal financial gain but on wisdom and virtue.

ultimately that which is truly honorable is truly useful, and that which is truly useful is truly honorable (20).
In the above example with the extra change, the useful and the honorable seem to be at odds. However, the store clerk could have lost her job over giving the wrong change. By the customer returning the change, a truly honorable act ended up becoming a truly useful act, one that benefited the customer as well as the clerk.
4. That which is right never exploits or impedes the benefit of another person; therefore, a right action must never cause harm to another human being (21-23).
It may be totally legal to talk someone into buying something that they don't need. Many salespeople make their living by doing so. However, in some cases, this act exploits another person. Even though there is nothing wrong with talking something into going into debt to buy a new car, for example, it is not a right action because it eventually causes harm.
