Greek Values In "The Odyssey"


Although the novel The Odyssey is in the form of a poem, throughout the novel the characters of the books reveal Greek values and culture. The novel includes many books within it. Each one tells more of the story of Odysseus' travels. As he travels, he talks to and encounters many Greek characters. Each character shows Greek culture and values such as respect to the Gods, hospitality, and fate.
The respect to the Gods is so great that it is expressed in the first lines. When Homer calls on the muse, "Tell me, Muse, of the man of many ways…" he is respecting the goddesses of song and poetry by calling upon them. Another example of the respect the gods are shown is when Odysseus ...

serve a stranger before you know his name. An example of this was when Eumaeus the swineherd welcomes Odysseus disguised as the bedraggled stranger. He throws his own bedcover over a pile of boughs as a seat for Odysseus, who does not reveal his identity. Observing Zeus's commandment to be kind to guests, Eumaeus slaughters a prime boar and serves it with bread and wine. That night the hero sleeps by the fire under the swineherd's spare cloak, while Eumaeus himself sleeps outside in the rain with his herd. Another example of the hospitality the Greeks show is when Penelope has her servant give Odysseus, still disguised, a foot bath. After a long talk Penelope says

among those friend from far places who have come to my palace
as guests, so thoughtful and well-considered is everything you
