Greek Essay

The Greeks had many values that they expressed throughout their cultures. These values show up in Greek works of literature as in the Iliad and the Odyssey. These values also appear in Greek plays such as ``Antigone''. These values were important to the Greeks aand they helped shape their society and culture.

In the play ``Antigone'' written by Sophocles, many Greek values show up. The most obvious one is family. In the excerpt, Antigone is repeatedly standing up for the fact that she buried her brother despite the consequence of death. In the passage while Antigone and Creon are arguing about her acts, Creon argues, ``You had a brother ...

anything which you proclaimed strong enough to let a mortal override the gods and their unwritten and unchanging laws.'' What this means is that Antigone believed that only the gods were capable of making laws as the rulers of the world, and no mere mortal should be using such a power. This also shows her devotion to the worship of the gods and believed that no mortal could challenge that. Devotion to the gods and loyalty to family are important Greek values that are portrayed in ``Antigone''.

In the excerpt about Hector in the Iliad the values of courage and family are portrayed. An example of both of these is when he is speaking with his wife, Andromache. When Andromache pleads with Hector to not go into battle he replies, ``I am not afraid of death but of what will come to you if the Greeks take our city.''
