“Gun violence in America kills more than 30,000 and injures almost 20,000 each year. The access to firearms in the United States is far too easy in 2012, there were a total of 31,076 deaths due to firearms” (Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence). Each state varies in law, from who can own and carry a weapon and where you can buy a weapon. To reduce firearm-affiliated crimes and save lives, each state should have stricter laws on the manufacturing of these deadly weapons, incorporate required annual background checks from dealers and private sellers and have greater control over gun trafficking into other states in the United States.

Twelve years later, in 2011, there were 7.7 million firearms being manufactured (Dept. of Justice. Statistics), putting more guns into a system of trained, untrained, and unlawful citizens. With this dramatic increase in the production of firearms, there was also a sharp incline in deaths. According to the database Gunpolicy.org, of the University of Sydney, there were a total 31,076 deaths by firearms, 11,078 of those were homicides, 19,392 were suicides and 606 were accidents in 2011. Furthermore, “Of the offenders for gender, 89.3 percent were males and of the offenders, for whom race was known, 52.4 percent were black, 45.2 percent were white, and 2.4 percent were of other races. Of the 11,078 murder victims in 2011, 77.6 percent were male. Concerning murder victims for whom race was known, 50 percent were black, 46 percent were white, and 2.6 percent were of other races” (Federal Bureau of Investigation. Statistics).
