I believe there is a moral to every story. What goes around comes around, seems to be the moral to . Jim Kendall wreaked havoc on the town he lived in for years, getting amused by others being humiliated and made a fool of. There comes a time when "every dog has his day" so to speak.
Jim Kendall was basically the town joker. He played "joke" after "joke" on people throughout the town. Sometimes he did it for his sheer amusement, other times he did it because he was at risk of looking like the fool and he needed to protect himself. Some in the town saw him as just a funny guy, others had to think as I , that he was just a heartless fool with no consideration for anyone other than himself.

new town doctor, Doc Stair. So in his eyes he had to make one of them look bad in order to boost himself up. He called Julie on the phone and impersonated the doctor, urging Julie that she had to come to his office at once, knowing the doctor was out of town, because he had something he needed to tell her at once. Julie bought into it and went to the office just to find no one there and to heed the abuse of Jim and his cronies as they made fun of her all the way home.

Jim also made fun of a boy in the town, Paul Dickson, that had an accident and in turn was mentally harmed by it. Jim would send him on errands that could never be fulfilled as well as calling him names. All for his own amusement. This is where Jim made his fatal mistake. Upon taking the young man out on a boating trip, he let the boy shoot his gun. Paul never handled a gun before and lost control and shot and killed Jim.
