"Half Gone" by Tim O'Brien is a story of a woman (Dorothy Stier) who have been afflicted with breast cancer and has to undergo mastectomy (operation where a breast will be removed in order to inhibit the spread of cancer cells), and Dorothy's fight and almost defeated life battling breast cancer and the effects of her mastectomy operation, which is low self-esteem and gradually failing her relationship with her husband. One of the main reasons why Fred can be considered Dorothy's 'guardian angel,' or a special friend (in the purest sense of friendship) is that he is able to know and determine the woman's inner thoughts and feelings, he confronts Dorothy's weak attitude and character without admonishment but with great understanding, he is somewhat a 'good guesser' in projecting things about Dorothy's past, present, and future life, giving us the impression that Fred has the powers to foretell what's going to happen next (characteristic of a supernatural being, like an angel), and more importantly, Fred was able to push Dorothy to her best attitude and outlook in life despite the impending death she faces from being afflicted with cancer.
