Investigate the character of Claudius. Hamlet claims that Claudius has no redeeming qualities. He is, after all, a murderer and a usurper. Is Claudius totally without merit? After Hamlet is confronted by his dead father's ghost and told "the serpent that did sting thy fathers life now ears his crown" (1.5.45-47) Hamlet conjures up a plan to expose Claudius as the man who murdered his father in cold blood. In order to do this he requests that the two players reenact a scene where his nephew murders the player king in the garden this in turn causes the king to stop the play and rush out saying "light, give me light" (3.2.295), proving the ghosts word that the King (Hamlets father) had been murdered by Claudius.
