because he realizes that his mother has no idea that Claudius deceived everyone and is the sole reason her husband is dead. Once Gertrude realizes that the base of all the lies, murder, regicide, and deceit is all Claudius she sees Hamlet in a different light and realizes that his is not crazy. Hamlet finds it easy enough to forgive his mother for her ignorance and their relationship soon begins to rebuild.
When Ophelia enters the picture, I believe he actually does love her, besides her obvious betrayal. He realizes that Ophelia has become a pawn in the game of men, and is being used by Claudius and Polonius to unwittingly betray Hamlet and his veil of feigned madness. Hamlet loves Ophelia and must protect her, even if he must fake hating her in order to save her from the order of events to follow. “To a nunnery, go; and quickly too.” (Act III, scene 1) Sadly though, he watches as his beloved Ophelia withers away because of her belief that Hamlet no longer loves her. ...
