way to describe his feelings. We get another look into the mind of Hamlet when he is talking about his thoughts that have “one part wisdom and ever three parts coward”. The word choice here shows another contradiction between the words “wisdom” and “coward”. A coward is able to have wisdom but if the cowardly aspect takes control than the wisdom is smothered. This is the case with Hamlet. He thinks that he has let his timid nature take over his knowledge of what is right and therefore he is angry with himself for being apprehensive. That is why he tells himself that his thoughts are “cowardly” which is an effective word to use. Another place where the power of diction is shown is when Hamlet is talking about the army of Fortinbras and uses the words, “fortune, death, and danger dare.” This use of forceful and intense words as well as the repeating nature of the letter “d” shows us Hamlet’s vicious attitude about his vengeance that he is yet to take. that sometimes revenge is necessary. He notices that Fortinbras is able to lead a strong army as well as being a tender leader. Hamlet wants to do the same. He wants to be able to be strong and take revenge while keeping his good person at heart. The last example of imagery says that Fortinbras army “Go to their graves like beds, fight for a plot.” When Shakespeare describes a bed like the soldier’s graves it is ironic because a “bed” is a warm and peaceful place to rest and a “grave” is a dreadful place you go when you die. But Shakespeare is using the word “bed” in another meaning just like he used the word “beast”, to make us think about Hamlet’s state of mind at this point. ...
