program? Well, there is no need to beat around the bush, the Head start Program fails to meet their long term goals and the nation can do a lot more in other programs with $4.7 billion dollars. It’s time to say goodbye to the “good ole’ head start days”.
The head start program began during the summer of 1965 and consisted of around 561,000 children, most of whom were African-American. At this time head start was only a summer program (Garces, Thomas, Currie Pg.1000). By the following year, it had expanded to reach three quarter of a million children including both African-American and white. As it continued to grow it eventually became a full year round schooling program by the early 1970’s. Head start obviously still exists today and serves more than 800,000 children of all races and ethnicities. Most of the children in the program are Three to Four years old. The program has quite a history but what results are these children getting from this?
