Heart disease refers to a set of diseases that affect the heart. These diseases include illnesses that relate to the blood vessels, arrhythmias, congenital heart defects and heart infections. Heart disease is also referred to as the cardiovascular disease (CVD), which is a term generally used to denote blocked or narrowed blood vessels that may lead to angina, heart attack or stroke. In addition, conditions and infections that affect heart valves, muscle and beating rhythms are considered heart disease as well (Braunwald, 1997).

and lost productivity. About 42 million women are experiencing some form of CVD while 8 million have a history of angina or heart attack. Around 35.3% of women's deaths above 20 years in America result from CVD. Congestive heart failure accounts for around 56.3% of all heart deaths from heart failure among women (Wang & Bashore, 2009).

CVD causes approximately 1.9 million deaths in the European Union and a total of 4 million in the entire European Union. This represents about 40% in the EU and 47% in Europe. CVD is the major cause of death of both women and men in all European countries except for 6 countries. Deaths from stroke are more common in Eastern and Central Europe compared to Southern, Northern and Western Europe. It is estimated that CVD costs approximately 196 billion to the EU economy every year, 54% of these costs go to health care, 24% to productivity losses and 22% are spent on information care (Naff, 2008).
